Createarth

Nature-based craft and connection workshops

[ About ]

Createarth ('create' + 'earth') workshops are designed to foster connection and community through creativity.

Led by Dr Rachele Wilson, an ecologist with a passion for crafting, Createarth workshops incorporate handicrafts like embroidery and weaving with natural, found or recycled materials.

A self-taught maker, Rachele’s practice is informed by over a decade of activism, research and teaching; her experiences with First Nations and marginalised peoples; and degrees in sustainability, environmental science and ecology.

At festivals and other large events, Createarth workshops serve as a safe space for integration and reflection to promote harm reduction.

Intro to Craftivism

Craftivism (craft + activism) empowers makers to highlight issues in subtle, thought-provoking, and often humorous ways, inviting others to contemplate these issues through a softer lense. Craftivism is the perfect entry into crafting for beginners, as it focuses less on technique or perfection and more on the message.

In this workshop, participants craft wearable patches, badges or jewellery with messages and symbols of environmental or social change. All participants receive recycled fabric, bamboo hoops, cotton thread, tools, and instruction in hand embroidery.

Co-creating Ephemeral Land Art

Land or earth art draws attention to the landscape, inviting viewers and makers to see the land as dynamic and living, constantly changing through the processes of growth and decay.  Ephemeral compositions deteriorate over time, eventually returning to the landscape from whence they were born.

In this workshop, participants co-create ephemeral land art using temporal matter like leaves, sticks, flowers or seeds to accentuate trees, rock formations and other habitat features. This is a grounding, tactile experience that facilitates connections between people and nature, highlighting the beauty of our shared fragility and impermanence.

Crafting Connections

Weave natural and found items into a boho bracelet or hair wrap to integrate your event experience.

In this workshop, participants receive cotton thread, natural objects and instruction in wrapping, beading and macrame techniques to weave items into their wearables.

Participants work in pairs, crafting hair wraps / bracelets directly onto their partner. Alternatively, individuals can use yarn in place of hair to make reusable hair wraps.
